
What are dentures?
Dentures are removable prosthetic used to replace the missing tooth. Usually they are made out of an acrylic resin which at times incorporates porcelain or metal to additionally support the structure. There are two main types of dentures: FULL DENTURES and PARTIAL DENTURES. Both types are finely crafted, custom-fitted. If properly maintained - they will appear natural and will give a perfect smile. Another function of the dentures is to help strengthen muscles controlling the expressions that require the support of the teeth; and the elimination of the problems with pronunciation - which may be caused by missing teeth, and those connected with chewing.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of dentures?
Advantages: dentures definitely provide a great smile with a very natural appearance. They are made of very strong material that makes them (if properly maintained) last very long time. Usually dentures last from five to ten years. For many patients they are a solution to their speech and jawing problems.
Disadvantages: it is true that it takes a little time before a patient will get used to them. There are temporary speech issues to overcome (last however only few days) and there is maintenance involved. The vexation of mouth or its sores may occur, but these are usually caused by poor dental hygiene, and not removing the dentures when it is necessary. It is normal that the mouth changes over the life of the dentures. That means that even though they last long, they may need to be replaced to achieve a better fit before they are worn out. Usually a person who has a denture chews at only 15-23% efficiency compared to a person who does it with their natural teeth. In the case of a full upper denture, the upper palate is covered and that most likely reduces taste of foods one is chewing.
Are There Alternatives to Dentures?
Yes. These are dental implants which can be used to support the bridges that are permanently cemented and that eliminate the need for a denture. The cost is usually greater, but the implants and bridges more closely resemble the feel of real teeth. Dental implants are becoming the alternative to dentures but not everyone meets the requirements for their implementation. Consult your dentist for advice.
